Mass Call 2009

Admission as Advocates and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Singapore 18 May 2009

Mass Call was held on 18 May 2009 at the Victoria Concert Hall, which was gazetted as a courtroom for the day. A total of 239 new advocates and solicitors were admitted to the Singapore Bar. Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong presided over the proceedings and delivered an address congratulating the newly-admitted advocates and solicitors, and their families.

The Chief Justice reminded the newly-admitted advocates and solicitors of their professional obligations and responsibilities to the court, their clients and fellow lawyers. He spoke of the many opportunities available to them. He also shared his rule of success in the law:

“Decide what you want the law to do for you (now that you have a licence to use it), and what you can do for the law (to make it serve the people better, with experience of its defects and inadequacies).”

In concluding, the Chief Justice wished the newly-admitted advocates and solicitors the best, and said that he looked forward to seeing some of them in the courts.
